- You were born abroad; - having a Portuguese mother or Portuguese father (also applies to grandparents); - That you declare that you want to acquire Portuguese nationality.
- Have not been sentenced for a crime punishable by imprisonment, equal to or greater than 3 years under Portuguese law; - Have sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language - Have existence of regular contacts with Portuguese territory, - Have Legal residence in Portugal - Have Regular travel to Portugal - bought or rented a house in Portugal more than 3 years ago - Live or have a connection with a Portuguese historical community abroadin the last 5 years - have regularly participated in the activities of the Portuguese community in the country where you live.
Nationality through Marriage
If you have been married for more than three years to a Portuguese national, you can acquire Portuguese nationality...
...under certain circumstances, described below:
- Have evidence of effective connection to the national community; - Have not been sentenced for a crime punishable by imprisonment, equal to or greater than 3 years under Portuguese law; - Have not performed public administration functions of a non-technical nature in the service of a Foreign State; - Have not performed voluntary military service in a foreign state; - Not be involved in activities related to terrorism.
The marriage must be registered in Portugal, before starting the process of Portuguese nationality.
NOTE THAT: Since 2020, after six years of marriage, the spouse can apply for nationality, even if there is no other effective connection with Portugal.
